National Road Safety Week 2025: Drive So Others Survive

Every year, over 1,300 Australians lose their lives and more than 44,000 are seriously injured on our roads. These aren't just numbers—they represent friends, family members, and colleagues whose lives have been tragically altered or lost. National Road Safety Week (NRSW), running from 11 to 18 May 2025, is a time to reflect, remember, and recommit to making our roads safer for everyone.

What Is National Road Safety Week?

NRSW is an annual initiative by the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, supported by governments, councils, businesses, and community organisations across the country. The week aims to highlight the impact of road trauma and promote actions to reduce it.

Daily Themes: A Week of Reflection and Action

Each day of NRSW focuses on a specific theme to encourage different aspects of road safety awareness:

  • Sunday, 11 May: More than a number – Remembering the 1,300 lives lost on our roads each year.

  • Monday, 12 May: Your speed matters – Encouraging drivers to slow down and drive to conditions.

  • Tuesday, 13 May: The road to zero – Taking the road safety pledge

  • Wednesday, 14 May: Get home from work safe – Focusing on workplace road safety.

  • Thursday, 15 May: Road safety for every age – Making safe choices at every stage of life.

  • Friday, 16 May: On the same path – Sharing our roads safely.

  • Saturday, 17 May: Yellow Ride – Giving each other space and sharing the road safely.

  • Sunday, 18 May: Regional roads – Taking extra care on regional roads.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Take the Pledge: Commit to safe driving by pledging to "Drive So Others Survive."

  • Wear Yellow: Don a yellow ribbon or clothing to show your support and raise awareness.

  • Participate in Events: Join local events like the Walk for Road Safety in Shepparton on 18 May, which includes community walks, guest speakers, and activities to honor those affected by road trauma.

  • Educate and Advocate: Use this week to discuss road safety with family, friends, and colleagues. Share resources and stories to promote safer driving behaviors.

Lessons to Learn

  • Every Life Counts: Behind every statistic is a person whose life has been impacted. Recognizing this can motivate us to drive more responsibly.

  • Shared Responsibility: Road safety isn't just about individual drivers; it's a collective effort involving pedestrians, cyclists, passengers, and policymakers.

  • Preventable Tragedies: Many road incidents are preventable through simple actions like obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, and not driving under the influence.

Final Thoughts

National Road Safety Week serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety in our daily lives. It's an opportunity to honour those we've lost, support those affected, and take actionable steps to prevent future tragedies. By participating in NRSW, we contribute to a culture of safety and respect on our roads.
